How to Identify Your Tablet Press Tooling Standard
Ordering the wrong tooling standard wastes time and money. Before placing an order, confirm which standard your press requires using one of these methods:
1. Check Your Press Manual
Every press manual specifies the turret bore diameter and the tooling standard the machine accepts. A turret bore diameter of 25.4mm indicates D tooling, while 19.0mm indicates B or BB tooling. The manual will also state whether the press uses TSM or EU standard geometry.
2. Measure an Existing Punch
Remove a punch from your turret and measure the barrel diameter with a micrometer. A barrel diameter of 25.4mm (1 inch) means D tooling. A barrel diameter of 19.0mm (0.75 inch) means B or BB tooling. To distinguish B from BB, measure the die outer diameter — 30.16mm is B tooling, 24mm is BB tooling.
3. Contact the Press Manufacturer
If you do not have the manual or existing tooling, contact the press manufacturer with your press model number. They will confirm the tooling standard. TSM vs EU Tooling Differences
TSM (Tablet Specification Manual) and EU (Euronorm) are the two global standards for tablet press tooling. At first glance, TSM and EU punches look similar — both use the same D, B, BB, and DB size designations. However, the two standards differ in critical dimensions that affect how the tooling performs in your press.
The key differences between TSM and EU tooling are barrel length, head flat thickness, and key angle. TSM tooling uses a domed head profile with a specific head flat diameter, while EU tooling uses a different head geometry with a larger head flat. The key slot angle also differs — TSM uses a Woodruff key, while EU uses a flat key at a different position.
Using the wrong standard in your press causes poor compression force distribution, uneven tablet hardness, and accelerated wear on both the tooling and the press cams. Indian-made presses (Cadmach, Rimek, ACG) typically use TSM tooling, while European presses (Fette, Korsch, IMA) use EU tooling.
